Dr. Hilal Topyildiz, MD (Turkey)

Mentor: Dr. Jacek Szepietowski, MD

Wroclaw, Poland 2019

Major goals for your mentorship experience: My major goals were to experience the practice of general dermatology and dermatosurgery in a different country and to appreciate the similarities and the differences between practices in Poland and my country.

What did you like best about your mentorship experience?: My favorite experience was working in the dermatosurgery unit where I saw different flap techniques, in addition to a range of other surgical procedures. I also enjoyed the ambulatory unit where I observed many patients with various diseases and their management.

Describe any special experiences with your mentor: Professor Szepietowski showed us the museum inside the dermatology department where I saw many wax sculptures depicting different cutaneous disorders. I also joined the opening ceremony of the Wroclaw Medical University together with my mentor.

Describe a skill acquired during your mentorship that you will definitely use when you return home: I learned different wound care management techniques and basic surgical techniques. When I return home, I am planning to use these newly acquired skills.

How will your mentorship experience impact your patient care and professional goals over the next year?: I will consider different treatment options that I have not used regularly in our clinic. I am planning to improve my surgical skills and I will definitely suggest that my colleagues apply to the ISD mentorship program.

How will your mentorship experience make an impact five years from now, including for your region or country?: Dermatologists don't perform surgical procedures in my country on a regular basis. As a result of my mentorship experience, I have seen how dermatologists can work as a team with plastic surgeons in the dermatologic surgery unit. In my department, I hope we can start to perform many more surgerical procedures.

Share a pearl you learned during your mentorship experience: Professor Szepietowski taught us about the history of his university and the famous scientists who worked there such as Albert Neisser, Heinrich Koebner, and Max Jessner. I am really glad to have had this experience at Wroclaw Medical University where many great dermatologists have worked.
