In memory of Cynthia Froehlich

Cynthia Froehlich
May 16, 1957 - May 5, 2021

It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Cynthia H. Froehlich, BA, MA, on May 5th in a tragic car accident. Cindy, as we fondly called her, was more than the Executive Director of the International Society of Dermatology – she was the heart and soul of our society. We will all miss her, from her sitting in the hallway outside the Monday evening ISD receptions at the AAD meeting to sitting next to the ISD President at Board meetings. Please provide your memories of interactions with Cindy in the box below.

Cindy was what i liked most about the ISD. She supported me as President and later Chairman of the www.skincareforall.org with enthusiasm. She treated the members of the committees and the whole membership with great awareness of what each had to offer to the benefit of the society.

I am shocked and saddened to learn about Cindy's passing. We worked together on a couple of projects since 2006, and earlier this year, we talked about future collaboration. She was always delightful to work with and a good communicator. May she rest in peace. She will be missed.

I first met Cindy in Milan. I remember her saying that she loved Nepal (my home country) for unknown reason. A very sad news. She will always remain in my heart. May her departed soul rest in peace.

Cindy was always so kind, cheerful and full of humor and joy - just like her name, Froehlich. She helped us when we were at a loss, and I will be forever grateful. I can still see her kind smile, and I am so sad for her family and friends. Please extend our most sincere condolences to Cindy's family. We are sorry beyond words for their loss.

Cindy nurtured ISD like her baby, she had been working proactively since the time I have known about ISD. She had been very helpful with a smile over her face all the time. I was in touch with her before the 6th CCD at Taipei regarding the scholarship constantly and when I met her at the conference venue for the first time, I never felt that it was the first time I was meeting her. She used to be at the ISD booth all the time and with her ever-smiling face. I was fortunate to meet her again at WCD Milan at the booth. You will always be remembered Cindy, I am sure you are still smiling wherever you are!!

On behalf of the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS), I would like to express my deepest condolences and sympathy on the passing of Cynthia H. Froehlich. I know that this is a big loss for the International Society of Dermatology as Cynthia was considered to be the heart and soul of the organization. My encounter with her impressed on me the excellence of ISD and she will surely be missed. We in the PDS will remember her fondly and our thoughts of her will be cherished, especially during these challenging times. Please extend our prayers and condolences to her bereaved family and be assured that we will continue to pray that our Lord will give them comfort and peace during this time of mourning.

It is so hard to imagine future ISD activities without Cindy Froelich. Cindy was a connector who knew who to call and who to refer you to for help. I have been a Member of the MENTORSHIP COMMITTEE for 12 years, most as CHAIR. We have come so far.... So many Committee Meetings and "sidebars" with Cindy to build up this Committee and make it what it is today. Cindy cared about every single Mentee and their experience. So many meetings and spending time with Cindy in the ISD booth.... Pulling people over at meetings and getting them to become members. Singing their National Anthems. We had so many conversations and laughs together. I don't ever recall a short conversation with Cindy. Such a smart, interesting, and thoughtful person. She really cared about the ISD. She was so supportive when the GLOBAL OUTREACH TASK FORCE was born. She shared my passion for helping deliver dermatologic care in Africa. We were also retooling the FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE together to make it a success in the future. Cindy touched every one of us in the ISD. I hope she rests in peace and her memory is forever a blessing.

It is with a heavy heart I open this celebration of life for Cynthia Froehlich. We are all here because we knew Cindy. As others have said, she was the mortar that held our Society together. She touched every part of the ISD with an indomitable spirit. A unique and gifted person, an unofficial matriarch. I personally feel I lost a dear friend. Someone that knew me and I for her. It has taken me this past week to regain my footing and wish to remember her as the positive selfless force that enabled those around her to be successful. When asked if I would accept this leadership position, I turned to Cindy and asked if she would stay on. This reflects the confidence and trust I had in Cindy and the key role she played in our Society. She was a good listener, filled with ideas, a problem solver, but with humor and a strong moral compass. Although slowed by her hip, she didn’t complain. Never missing a meeting, event or trip she committed to attend. I imaged after the Melbourne Congress we would be laughing and telling stories as we handed off our responsibilities hoping we left the Society a better place. I will miss that sympatico, that partner in crime and yet feel fortunate our paths ever crossed. Job well done Cindy. Even in passing you bring us closer together

Cindy, if I try to decipher Cindy, I will say: C: as Cheerful, and we all know how kind she was with all of us. I: as Icon and she was an icon of all our meetings and of the ISD booth in the different scientific events. N: as Near, she will stay near to all of us as long as we are alive D: as Dermatology;;;she dedicated her life to build bridges between dermatologists coming from all parts of the world. What she did, was just fantastic Y: as youthful, who never been impressed by her legendary smile, a smile coming from the bottom of her heart...an organic smile. and finally as a tribute to Our Cindy, let's continue moving on the way she loved a lot, the way of fraternity, cooperation and dialogue between different generations. "The best part of Cindy was that she was wise and comforting. She could gauge how you felt as a junior colleague and try to be inclusive to younger colleagues who often feel shy.She has been an integral part of my journey in ISD right from an ISD Travel Scholarship winner to a Vice President and Chair,ISD Mentorship Committee. We will miss a person who spead joy and congeniality,a major reason for ISD's success."- Rashmi Sarkar,Vice President and Chair of ISD International Mentorship Committee. It is so sad to know of the demise of our friend,Cindy Froehlich, Executive Director of ISD in a car accident, who was always ready to help us with a smiling face at the ISD booth or younger members with travel scholarships.I know her since my first ISD Travel Scholarship in 2004 till my journey as Vice President and Chair of the ISD International Mentorship Committee. What I remember is she was as kind when I met her as a junior consultant .You understand and remember a friend's behaviour when you were young and starting out.Behaviour towards junior colleagues matter.I have had immense help from her insights. Martin Kassir and I would often help her to clear up after our Mentorship Committee meeting while heading out in the car to the ISD reception.I will miss her as will do many others.RIP Cindy wherever you are and continue spreading joy!

I knew her since 2002 end. Dr. Coleman Jacobson was coming to Kolkata during DERMACON 2003. Cindy was coordinating with me on behalf of ISD. Then during the Beijing Congress, as an ISD scholarship holder again I had to interact with this affectionate and caring soul. During my tenure as the secretary of IADVL(2006-08) we worked more closely and I still cherish her kind help to our Indian colleagues before WCD 2007. The we started meeting in every AAD, EADV and obviously ISD meetings. Her guidance before the ISD regional Congress hosted at Kolkata along with ACSICON is still fresh in my mind. I was introduced to her warm hearted erudite husband in Vancouver in 2015. I can't imagine as ISD booth without her. In every future meetings my eyes will search you my friend.

Thank you, Cindy for being a mentor and, more importantly, a friend. Your influence spans across the globe, and your dedication to and passion for ISD and its missions will not soon be forgotten. I hope you are enjoying endless coffee and laughs with your parents and aunts on a porch somewhere in the sun. Forever grateful, Tara Winton

It is very, very sad to hear that Cindy Froehlich is not among us anymore after a tragic car accident. She will always be remembered by her big smiles and laughs. Cindy was very easy to talk to and to deal with. She loved to travel and that is how I got to know her more. Besides her presence in the ISD booths and in all the Board and Committee meetings, and watching her doing a very hard and competent work for so many years for the ISD, I also had frequently wonderful occasions with her as a tourist when we were getting to know the city we were visiting for a congress or other event. Cindy will always be loved and missed!!! My condolences to her family. Marcia Ramos-e-Silva Executive Vice-President – ISD
