2017 Award Recipients

To honor the memory of Maria M. Duran, MD, former Secretary-General and Executive Vice-President of the International Society of Dermatology, the Maria M. Duran Committee wishes to recognize leaders in international dermatology and those who have made significant contributions to dermatologic conditions affecting women and children.


2017 Maria Duran Lectureship

Dr. Francisco "Pancho" Kerdel, USA

The Maria Duran speaker was world-renowned dermatologist and former ISD President Dr. Francisco Kerdel (US). A graduate of St. Thomas Hospital Medical School, London University, London, England, Dr. Kerdel specialized in dermatology at Harvard University. His academic career began in New York in 1984 as assistant physician in the Department of Dermatology at the University of New York Medical Center, continuing at the University of Miami. Currently, Dr. Kerdel is a Clinical Voluntary Professor of the University of Miami and the International University of Florida, where he is the Vice-Chair of the Department of Dermatology. He is also the Director of Dermatology at Larkin Community Hospital.

 


2017 Maria Duran Medal

Dr. Lidia Rudnicka (Poland)

The Maria Duran medal was awarded to Dr. Lidia Rudnicka (Poland) for her invaluable contribution to the world of dermatology. Dr. Rudnicka is the head of the Department of Dermatology and Senior Lecturer at the Medical University of Warsaw. She has published more than 200 articles in several peer review journals, such as the Journal of Experimental Medicine, Journal of Clinical Research, Journal of Arthritis and Rheumatism, the Journal of Research in Dermatology, and the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, among others. She has also been a guest lecturer at several recognized universities around the world, as well as guest lecturer at events organized by multiple international dermatology societies. She is currently a board member of the Polish Society of Dermatology and has held several positions at the American Academy of Dermatology, as well as at the European Academy of Dermatology, where she is currently an associate editor of the Academy's magazine. It was Dr. Rudnicka who coined the term tricoscopy for the dermatoscopic hair examination.
